The left-back has never been selected to represent his country but his colleague at Anfield believes his form this season merits him a starting place against England
Stewart Downing says his Liverpool team-mate Jose Enrique deserves a call-up to the Spainside that will take on England in a friendly at Wembley later this month.
The Three Lions host the European and world champions on November 12 with Downing expected to be part of the England squad.
The former Aston Villa and Middlesborough winger moved to Merseyside this summer, alongside Enrique.
The left-back has been an ever present since leaving Newcastle, playing every minute of the 10 Premier League matches he has been available for.
So far the 25-year-old has not been recognised by his national side, but Downing believes his excellent form for the Reds means he deserves a long-awaited call-up to the national side.
"Jose is a talented player and has done very well since he's come here," Downing told BBC Radio Merseyside.
"He must have a great chance of getting in the Spain squad and maybe he will be lining up against England.
"I enjoy playing alongside him and I think you can see we're gelling as a team"
